Cusp Natural Products has been making handcrafted, sustainable products for your home and family since it was founded in 1995 by Lynette Culver. Together with her son-in-law, David Bomberger, she chose to start with a simple, sustainable product line made of the highest quality hemp fabrics. They began with the washcloth and it’s still our most popular item today.
With her grassroots, social marketing campaigns and her warm and friendly personality, she picked up the phone and made friends quickly. Within a few short months she attracted the notice of Whole Foods and Wild Oats natural food stores. When the internet came along, she made herself a website.
Lynette was passionate in her belief in Cusp Natural Products and everything it stood for. For her, it was a labor of love. Her customers were more like friends. She taught herself everything about running a business and Cusp NP was a whirlwind one-woman operation until 2009, when she passed away unexpectedly. Everyone that knew her understood that she never lost sight of what was most important – the personal connection she enjoyed in her relationships with customers, and making a quality product that was both good for people and good for the earth.
In 2009 – with his wife (and Lynette’s daughter), Stacey’s blessing – David stepped in to keep Lynette’s life’s work alive. “I am still in awe of all she was able to accomplish,” he says. And as he guides Cusp Natural Products into the future, making it his own, he knows that the heart and the personal values Lynette put into this business will always be a part of everything we do.
Cusp Natural Products sources all of our hemp from Eastern Europe, where they leave the hemp fibers longer, adding great strength and durability to our products. The longer fiber also contributes to visible irregularities in hemp fabric, twine, yarn and thread. Lynette always said she enjoyed the irregularities because they added character.
While hemp is not the only sustainable, earth-friendly fiber, we have found that it has several natural properties that make it ideal as a base for Cusp NP’s all- natural, environmentally friendly products.
- STRONG and DURABLE: Hemp fiber is one of the strongest and most durable of all natural textile fibers. Products made from hemp will outlast their competition by many years. Not only is hemp strong, but it also holds its shape, stretching less than any other natural fiber.
- IT BREATHES: Due to the porous nature of the fiber, hemp is more water absorbent, and will dye and retain its color better than any fabric including cotton. This porousness allows hemp to “breathe,” so that it is cool in warm weather. Furthermore, air which is trapped in the fibers is warmed by the body, making hemp garments naturally warm in cooler weather.
- ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY: An extremely fast growing crop that produces more fiber yield per acre than any other source, it requires less land to grow the same amount as other fibers. Hemp grows well in the U.S., and leaves the soil in excellent condition for any succeeding crop. Hemp’s strong roots anchor and protect the soil from runoff, building and preserving topsoil and subsoil structures similar to those of forests. Hemp plants shed their leaves all through the growing season, adding rich organic matter to the topsoil and helping it retain moisture.
- Naturally ANTIBACTERIAL and RESISTANT TO MOLD AND MILDEW: Lab tests confirm the natural antibacterial properties of hemp fibers, which means our hemp products stay fresher longer than those made with other fabrics.
